Matched Betting Info for Beginners

We will cover a few of the basic terms that we use within matched betting on this post.

Back Bet

The back bet is the bet with the bookie where you back a selection. So for example you might be backing Leicester at odds of 3 (3 is the decimal version of 2/1)

Lay Bet

A lay bet is a single bet that covers every other outcome. So in football if we have backed Leicester, we would LAY Leicester which effectively covers the draw and the opposite team to win. We do this using a betting exchange, and we will use Betfair Exchange. Another way to describe  a lay bet would be to call it 'bet against', so you would BACK team A with the bookie and bet against them (LAY) with the betting exchange.

Qualifying Bet

To get the free bets on offer we need to place a qualifying bet first. So for example (a bet £5 get £20 offer) we would place a £5 back bet as the qualifying bet, and place a lay bet in the betting exchange to cover the other possible outcomes.

Free Bet

Once we have completed the qualifying £5 bet we will be given our £20 free bet. This is where we make the profit.  We place the £20 free bet as a back bet on anything you want. It is best to aim for odds of around 5 or 6, The higher odds you take the more profit you will make, but you will also need more money in the betting exchange to LAY the bet. So don't go for too high odds, it's not worth it.

Finding Your First Bet - The Qualifying Bet

Many bookies have terms such as your back bet MUST be at odds of 1.5 (1/2) or higher. To change your odds from fractional (1/2) to decimal (1.5) you can do this by clicking on 'decimal' at the very top of the page.

To have the smallest possible qualifying loss for this offer, to maximise our total profits, we need to find a close match between the bookie and the betting exchange. So if you find a bet which is 1.6 with the bookie, you want it to be as close to 1.6 on the exchange as possible. 1.6 -> 1.66 would be a perfectly good match. 1.6 to back and 1.9 to lay would not be a good match and we would look for something better. Simply, the smaller the gap between the back and lay odds, the less you will lose on the qualifying bet. A 50p loss or less from a £10 qualifying bet is fine.

Using the Betting Exchange

Before we place the back bet we want to ensure that we have located a good match for the back bet and also that you are ready to place the lay bet on the betting exchange. Using Betfair Exchange, locate the game you want to bet on. There are 2 columns, a blue one and a red one. The blue column is to place a back bet, and the red column is to place a lay bet. The lay odds in the red column are the ones we use to compare against the back odds with the bookie. When we are happy we have found a good match we figure out how much money to put on the lay bet using a matched betting calculator, and then place the bets in this order.

1 - Place the £5 back bet with the bookie.
2 - Place the lay bet with Betfair Exchange, using the matched betting calculator to work out how much to bet on the lay bet.

Using Your Free Bet

After the qualifying bet has settles (the match is complete) you will have won money either in to the bookie or into the betting exchange. At this point the bookie will credit you £20 as a free bet.

Most sites have free bets which have terms to state that the free bet stake is not returned with any winnings. For example, if you make a back bet on something with even odds (odds of 2) you would normally have returned £20 from a £10 bet. This £20 is your initial £10 stake and your £10 profit. Using a free bet where the stake is not returned, this means if you win an even odds bet (odds of 2) then you will only have £10 returned to you, as it excludes the initial £10 stake. To maximise how much money you get from the free bet you should place the free bet on higher odds. Typically odds between 5-10 are ideal. You still need a fairly close match between the back bet and the free bet. For example, odds of 7 for the back bet and 7.2 for the lay bet would be fine.

The reason we take higher odds is because you get more profit from the free bet. Use the matched betting calculator and play around with different odds to help you understand how much profit you will make depending on the odds you use, and how close the match needs to be. You should aim to get £7.50 - £8 profit from each £10 free bet you get.

Once you have found a good match which gets you £15+ profit from your £20 free bet, we then do the same again.

1 - Place the back bet first using the free bet.
2 - Take the lay stake from the matched betting calculator and place the lay bet straight afterwards.

Once this bet settles, your combined balance between the bookie and Betfair will be around £15 higher than when you started.

Once you have found your bet on William Hill, find the same bet on Betfair Exchange. Make sure the lay bet is close to the back bet. For example, a back bet at odds of 5, you should make sure the lay bet with Betfair is around 5.3 or less. If it is more than this it is worth your time finding a different bet with similar odds. So I am now on attempt #4. I am starting with a £25 stake and to end of £500 means to multiply this by 20. Challenging, but certainly possible. Keeping to safe bets I can definitely do this!

With odds of around 1.4 for each bet it means that each bet will be a fairly safe bet (always odds on). I need 9 bets in a row to win to reach £500.

France are big favourites for this game, with pre match odds of 1.25 (1/4).

They are the home nation in the tournament, now playing their 2nd game. Their 1st game wasnt their best and they still got a win, and they will be more settled for this game. In addition, the opposition are rank outsiders and few would expect them to even get a point. But it is the Euros and as Iceland proved last night, everyone has a chance.

So I am now on attempt #3. This time I am raising the stakes a little and starting at £25 instead of £10. This means I am looking to multiply my stake by 20 times instead of 50, and so this in theory should be that bit more achievable. Betting on low odds of around 1.4, it means I need 2 less games in total to win £500.

I have picked out the Norway VS Iceland international friendly. After 30 minutes Norway are 1-0 up and the stats are very heavily in their favour with them having had the lions share of attacking plays and shots.

Pre-game, Iceland are a higher ranked team according to Fifa, but both are relatively close in the rankings. It is a friendly game and so there is no strong case for either team to be particularly desperate or particularly complacent.

The odds are pretty good for Norway despite being 1-0 up and despite their dominance in the game, most likely because they were slight underdogs before the game began. I have odds of 1.45 with Betfair Exchange, and so my £25 stake is looking to make £11.25 profit.

Copa Argentina game, where the home team are bottom of the Argentina's top league, and the away team are mid table in the league below them.

Athletico will be without the pressure of being bottom in the league and will be refreshed to be playing a smaller club. The first 5 minutes they have been the better team and pressing hard with 1.5 attacking plays per minute with 1 shot made and 1 corner obtained.

Odds are very even at the moment with the draw being the odds on favourite, but between the two the home team have the slightly better odds. Perhaps higher that they should be because of their poor form in the league.

Should be a close game with the home team being im my opinion the most likely to win. Taking a +0.5 handicap meaning the home team bet wins if it is a draw or better is at 1.51. With safety in mind this is the bet I am going for.

Trivia - for the last 8 competitive games between them the away team have not scored.

And damn it was close. 91st minute goal saved my skin on this. Brings my balance up to £55.46 to put into bet #3

At half time it is 1-1 and it is looking unlikely that the home team will win this. Odds of 1.4 is not too bad, and I am feeling very confident on this one.

OK so at the time of writing this update, the game has not finished, but it is well and truly over. No close call on this one. Feeling a little silly for playing it safe and not going for the outright win. Its currently 7-1 with 5 minutes to go... so I am going to go ahead and post this up now as a win... 3rd win in a row, bringing us up to £77.64.

86 minutes in and its 1-1. Likely to be a draw, with a possibility either team could nick it at the last minute. But with 4 minutes of normal time remaining, when i spotted odds of 1.3 for the draw I had to snap it up. There wasn't quite enough money in the market to put down the full £77.64 and so my bet here is £68.11, which will get me £20.43 profit bringing me to a new total of £98.07.

For anyone following me on a Facebook betting group, sorry that this one was not posted. There was too little time and not enough money in the market. William hill had the bet available at 1.18 which I don't see as being value for money hence the reason for not posting.

5 more bets at odds of around 1.4 will bring me up to the £500 mark. 4 bets done successfully. Nearly half way there.

Bet on Away Team to Win with +1.5 Handicap

At half time the score is 0-0, and so this bet like most of mine is placed in play. The home team are first in the league and the away team are 2nd. There is a fairly big point difference between the two so the home team are strong favourites.

However the away team are playing very strongly and are showing every sign of taking full points for this game. However they are away against a strong team and so with safety in mind I have gone for +1.5 handicap which means they can lose by 1 goal and my bet will still win. 

The game had an excellent finish. The away team went 1-0 down, but then soon took the lead 2-1 and the game finished 2-2. Safely within the handicap. Wouldve been about double the profit if i had gone with 0.5 handicap instead but I am playing safe to ensure I get to the end point of £500. 9 in a row is hard enough without taking big risks :)

Home team are all over them... If they don't win by a couple i'd be surprised. 30 minutes in and its 5 shots to 0. 24 dangerous attacks to 6.3 corners to 0. Those are my kinda stats. Only time will tell, but I'll be damned if this doesn't go my way.

Determined to get this one spot on all the way through. Will be tricky as international friendlies are unpredictable. Big teams fail to get results due to experimenting with the team, and players play safe as to ensure they don't get injured in the run up to the Euros. So any bet needs to be very safe!

That said, I like to get decent value on slightly higher odds too, especially at the start of the challenge to get the stake up.

So I picked out Switzerland VS Belgium at half time, the game is currently 1-1 and Belgium are looking to be the more attacking team overall, and they have one of the best teams in the world. The odds for them to win are at 2.64, which reflects the team they have put out, and the fact they have not completely dominated the first half. I am sure they will be eager to win, and will give it everything in the 2nd half.

Fortunate that Switzerland got a red 10 minutes from the end, Belgium finally scored 3 minutes later. The game finished 2-1 to Belgium and gets me from £10 -> £26.40

£26.40 going in to this bet to take us 1 step closer to £500. Still on international friendlies and looking for the safest place to get me to the next step.

So we are 30 minutes into a game I have been keeping an eye on. It is looking very one sided, as you can see.

So the odds for the team on the left are at 1.3. £26.40 on that without a 2nd thought. Now just to wait for the full time result.

The teams in play are FK Olaine VS DSVK Traktors JDFS... and for clarity, the bet is on the home team to win. Loving the away teams name though, ;)

Wow, 32 shots from the home team, and not a single goal. They completely dominated and i cant believe they didn't get the result. The bet looked a very safe one, but that's the nature of gambling, anything can happen (or, in this case, not happen).

Ten to Five Hundred Pounds - Challenge #1

I have spent many years betting on sports and over the years I have picked up a few tricks.

If I had one piece of advice for anyone with regards to betting, it is to bet on 'value'.

This blog will be to keep record of my betting adventures, and to share some of my insights which will most definitely make you profit...

There will be 2 main aspects to my blog. Guaranteeing profit by taking advantage of bookies online promotional offers, which I will explain in detail as we go. And then gambling a small proportion of this on multi-leg sports accumulators to build up to big wins.

 This evening I have hand picked an in play game to start a £10-£500 challenge.

This simply means I will start with a £10 bet, and when it wins I will take the original stake and my winnings and put it all on the next bet, time and time again, until we get to £500.

Bet #1 is an in-play bet on: Fram v Throttur Reykjavik from Icelandic League 1. Live score is 0-1 at 65 minutes and odds of 2.7 for it to remain at 0-1.

For this bet I am using Betfair Exchange as it has most of the games available to bet on and has better odds than your typical bookies sportsbook.

Odds of 2.7 means that if it wins, it returns my £10 multiplied by 2.7, which is £27. £17 of this is profit, and the other £10 being my original stake.

 My reasoning for this bet is because both teams are fairly evenly matched judging by their league positions and recent form. The match for the first 65 minutes has had less than average attacking play, shots, shots on target, and corners. This is destined to be low scoring, and with 25 minutes left to play, odds of 2.7 is great value.

 Finished 0-1. I have now turned £10 into £27. This £27 will go in to bet #2.

OK so I'm watching the game between BAHIA VS JOINSVILLE progress. The home team were strong favourites before the game started, and are statistically all over the other team at 40 minutes in. 9 shots vs 1, 6 corners vs 0. They are on better form in the Brazilian League 2, and won 4-1 from home last time they played (albeit 2 years ago).

The favourites odds have gone up as the time in the game disappears. It's only a matter of time before Bahia score. So with odds of 1.82 on 888 sport, I am very confident we have a winner on our hands.

My £27 returns from bet #1 is being invested here with a hopeful return of £49.14, which will be £22.14 profit. The £49.14 will then go in to the 3rd bet and get me well on the way to my £500 milestone.

BET #2 RESULT - WIN

Boom! I am now up to almost £50 in just 2 bets. The game finished 1-0 and never looked like being anything other than a Bahia win.

Generally it is better to take lower odds to build up an accumulator like this, as the higher the odds the higher the theoretical chance of your bet losing. Luckily I got odds of 2.7 on the first bet which was a fantastic find on betfair as the odds dropped to just 2.1 about 2 minutes later.

Now the stakes are higher for bet #3, so I will be sure to only bet on high value bets where the in play stats are stacked in my favour. Even if i lose, I will only be down by my original £10 stake, but each win brings me one step closer to my £500 target.

International Friendlies can be unpredictable. I have picked out Czech Republic vs Malta. Malta will struggle to score many goals in this game but Czech Republic are capable of scoring a few on their day.

Observing the earlier stages in the game it is looking very slow paced and likely to end low scoring. Under 3.5 goals is at odds of 1.67 after 15 minutes with only 2 shots in the game so far. Will there be 4+ goals? Possibly, but odds of 1.67 are pretty decent. High value.

Edit - Czech Republic have decided they dont need lots of shots to score lots of goals. By the time of writing this they are 2-0 and the bet is now very much in doubt. Here's to hoping they're happy with two and take a nap :)

£49.14 -> £82.06 if this comes in.

To go from £10 to £500 has a theoretical change of happening once every 50 attempts, but I intend to be far more regular than that to earn profit by only placing bets of good value every time.
